The recorded history of Sherman County, Kansas began with the Kidder Massacre. At the time the massacre took place, July 0f 1867, railroads were just beginning to wind their way west across the plains. The County was settled in 1885 and Goodland became the county seat in 1887. When the Rock Island Railroad came to Goodland in 1888, the City was on its way to becoming a tri-state trade center, and today is one of the largest cities in northwest Kansas.

The city was named for its good land and pioneers came by “Prairie Schooner” bringing their tools and plows, settling on land as provided by the Homestead Act, building their houses with the material that was available – the sod. Those who “Came to Stay” brought their families and determination to live here.

When the first white settlers arrived, Goodland was nothing but prairie grass and blue sky. It would eventually produce countless varieties of small grains, corn, flax, potatoes, sugar beets, sunflowers, and beans.

Over the years Goodland has maintained its ties to agriculture and much of its industry is agricultural related. Goodland recognizes that a diverse economy leads to a more stable economy and the pioneer spirit that began this community continues working to expand horizons and provide opportunities so that we may continue to provide the “good land” for today’s pioneers and entrepreneurs. Goodland isn’t just our name; it’s our way of life.
